- See if User has a valid IP address ( ipconfig from Command or CMD ) ( Users can have multiple IP Addresses )
- 192.168.xxx.xxx IP
- 192.168.xxx.xxx is a router IP address ( Linksys, D-Link, or Motorola ... )
- This indicates that you are directly connected to a router, and not the internet. Computer ~~ Router ~~ Broadband Modem ~~ Signal Source
- To Continue troubleshooting you must connect directly to the Broadband Modem Computer ~~ ~~~ ~~ Broadband Modem ~~ Signal Source
- If you have a 192.168.xxx.xxx and there is nothing between the computer and the broadband modem, There is a router built into the Broadband Modem, and it is providing the computer with the 192.168.xxx.xxx IP Address. If this seems to be the case, refer to the ISP.
- Try going to 192.168.xxx.1 (If there is a configuration Page, it should appear, and offer some information on the IP Address and other misc. information
- If this is a Gateway Wireless Router, Transfer to Wireless Support, and tell them that they are receiving a Router IP address and cannot connect to the internet
- Gateway will also troubleshoot other router brands for a nominal fee of around $75
- 169.254.xxx.xxx IP Address
- This is an internal windows configuration IP address that can be used for ad-hoc wired or wireless networks Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 220874
- This IP address will not allow you to access the internet
- Reinstall the Net Card Drivers
- ipconfig /renew (ME/2000/XP) (ipconfig /renew_all (95/98))
- Does the Net Card Plug have LED lights on next to it?
- If No, The Net card needs to be reseated or replaced
- If Yes, Reset the Broadband modem if available
- 0.0.0.0 IP Address
- Check for Firewalls and Disable them (Reinstalling TCP/IP does this)
- ipconfig /renew (ME/2000/XP) (ipconfig /renew_all (95/98))
- 10.xxx.xxx.xxx Address
- 10.xxx.xxx.xxx is a major network address (Business, DSL, Cable, or College)
- This is a proper address for a large Business or a College / University
- This type of address indicates that there is an internal helpdesk to assist the Cu
- No IP Address
- Check the Drivers
- Uninstall / Reinstall TCP / IP
