TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology freshman Alison Bailey (Schaumburg, Ill.) and graduate student Becky Smith (Plainfield) became the first Rose-Hulman women’s tennis players to earn all-conference honors in the five-year history of the program, in results released by the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference office.

Bailey finished 2-0 at the No. 2 singles position, while Smith compiled a 2-0 mark at the 2000 SCAC Championship in Memphis, Tenn., on Apr. 27-29. Under league guidelines, players that finish undefeated at their respective positions in the conference tournament earn all-conference recognition.

Bailey finished the 2000 season with an 18-7 overall record in singles play and an 8-13 mark in doubles. Bailey finished 5-1 at the No. 2 singles position, 4-1 at No. 3, and 8-4 at No. 5 to highlight her freshman campaign. Bailey is the daughter of William and Brenda Bailey and is a computer engineering major.

Smith compiled an 8-14 singles record, including an 8-10 mark at the No. 4 singles position, as a graduate student this season. Smith returned to Rose-Hulman in both women’s basketball and tennis this year after earning a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering last spring. Smith is the daughter of Colin and Kathy Smith.

Rose-Hulman finished the 1999-2000 season with a 10-16 record and finished ninth in the SCAC Championships. The tennis squad became the first female athletic team in school history to compile a winning season by finishing with a 7-6 mark last fall.
